Alex Pothen

Biography
Alex Pothen is a professor of computer science at Purdue University. His research interests are in combinatorial scientific computing (CSC), parallel computing, and bioinformatics. Alex received an undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and a PhD from Cornell University. He was the Director of the Combinatorial Scientific Computing and Petascale Simulations (CSCAPES) Institute, a pioneering research project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to design combinatorial algorithms for extreme-scale computers. Alex helped found the CSC research community which organizes the SIAM Workshop on CSC every two years. He serves as an editor of the Journal of the ACM and SIAM Review and was on the editorial board of SIAM Books, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, and other publications. Alex has mentored sixteen PhD students and postdoctoral scientists, and has published more than a hundred papers.
